I keep coming back to class size when I look at courses. A cheaper course with sixteen people sounds fine until I work out how much actual time that might leave for everyone to try material and get useful feedback. If two courses covered similar ground, would you pay noticeably more for a smaller group, or is the tutor and amount of stage time a better thing to judge? I’m trying to make “just gig more” into something slightly more deliberate. If you’re mostly self-taught, do you review every recording with the same checklist — where the first laugh came, setups that dragged, lines you rushed, bits you forgot — or only listen back when something felt noticeably different? I can see the obvious advantage of doing a course from home, especially if work makes getting across London every week a pain. But stand-up is such a physical thing that I’d want more than a Zoom lecture about joke structure. If you were comparing online courses, what would you look for — everyone performing material each session, live feedback, small groups, a final showcase, recordings to review? I keep thinking the valuable bit of a course should be the feedback you couldn’t easily give yourself. But “good feedback” can mean anything from line-by-line notes to one big observation about how you perform. If you were paying for stand-up training, what would you want the tutor to actually do with your material — diagnose why a bit isn’t landing, suggest exercises, challenge the premise, give performance notes, something else? I’m comparing course formats rather than specific providers and keep getting stuck on the showcase. A final gig sounds useful because there’s an actual deadline, but if the alternative used that time for another proper teaching/feedback session I’m not sure which I’d value more. I keep seeing courses at wildly different prices, and the syllabus alone doesn’t really tell me whether the money buys anything I couldn’t get from writing and gigging more. What would make you think a paid course is genuinely worth it — detailed feedback, a small group, lots of stage time, a showcase, ongoing support, something else? I’m not anti-course at all, but I keep going back and forth on whether I actually need one yet. I’m trying to say yes to more stage time, but the bit nobody warned me about is getting home late on a Tuesday and then pretending to be a functioning adult at work on Wednesday.
