When a new tag gets a bigger laugh than the original punchline, do you rebuild the bit around it?

I’ve got a bit where a throwaway line I added at the end is starting to get a better response than the punchline I actually built the thing around. Do you treat that as a clue that the tag is really the destination and rewrite the setup to get there faster? Or keep the original structure for a few more runs in case I’m overreacting to a couple of good nights? I’m trying to follow the laughs without rebuilding the entire bit every time something unexpected works.
