I’m trying to say yes to more stage time, but the bit nobody warned me about is getting home late on a Tuesday and then pretending to be a functioning adult at work on Wednesday. I don’t want to only gig at weekends because that cuts out loads of opportunities. For people doing comedy around a normal job, do you set a hard limit on weeknights, cluster gigs together, or just accept being knackered for a while?
I’d set the limit before you’re tired, not after. Two work-night gigs is plenty for me unless there’s a specific reason to do more. The annoying part is that the stage time can be five minutes and the whole evening still disappears.
I’m worse at this because I always think the late slot will somehow finish early. It never does. I’ve started judging gigs partly on travel now — an average room 25 minutes away can be more useful to me than a brilliant five that turns Wednesday into a write-off.
